Lorsqu&rsquo;il s&rsquo;agit de projets de construction comme celui-ci, cela signifie qu&rsquo;il faut r\u00e9duire le carbone incorpor\u00e9 ainsi que les \u00e9missions de carbone li\u00e9es \u00e0 l&rsquo;exploitation. Examinons les tactiques utilis\u00e9es pour r\u00e9duire les \u00e9missions de ces deux sources.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\u00a0\u00bbText &#8211; reducing embodied carbon\u00a0\u00bb _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.22.2&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb custom_margin=\u00a0\u00bb20px||||false|false\u00a0\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00a0\u00bb{}\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<h2>R\u00e9duire le carbone incorpor\u00e9<\/h2>\n<p>Selon le guide du carbone incorpor\u00e9 de l&rsquo;American Institute of Architects, (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/content.aia.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-10\/21_10_STN_DesignHealth_474805_Embodied_Carbon_Guide_Part1.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Embodied Carbon Guide<\/a>), celui-ci repr\u00e9sente environ 38 % des \u00e9missions de carbone d&rsquo;un immeuble de bureaux moyen au cours de ses dix premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es d&rsquo;existence. Pour une structure \u00e0 haute performance comme le HQ2 d&rsquo;Amazon, ce chiffre est consid\u00e9rablement plus \u00e9lev\u00e9. Par cons\u00e9quent, la gestion du carbone utilis\u00e9 dans la structure et l&rsquo;enveloppe d&rsquo;un projet a des implications significatives sur son impact environnemental au cours de la premi\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie. Une bonne gestion de ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments contribuera grandement \u00e0 atteindre la carboneutralit\u00e9 d&rsquo;ici 2040.<\/p>\n<p>Pour r\u00e9duire l&#8217;empreinte carbone du b\u00e2timent, ZGF a commenc\u00e9 par rassembler les DEP (D\u00e9claration Environnementale de Produit) pour un grand nombre des composantes du projet. Comme l&rsquo;explique Brian Earle, \u00ab la premi\u00e8re \u00e9tape pour pouvoir r\u00e9duire le carbone est de le suivre. Et la premi\u00e8re \u00e9tape de ce suivi est d&rsquo;encourager la cr\u00e9ation de D\u00e9clarations Environnementales de Produits \u00bb. Les DEP du projet ont port\u00e9 fruits en permettant au projet d&rsquo;obtenir les cr\u00e9dits LEED<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> associ\u00e9s sous <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/credits\/new-construction-core-and-shell-schools-new-construction-retail-new-construction-data-43?return=\/credits\/New%20Construction\/v4\/Material%20&amp;%20resources\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Materials and Resources \u2013 Building product disclosure and optimization &#8211; environmental product declarations<\/em><\/a>, et <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/credits\/new-construction-core-and-shell-schools-new-construction-retail-new-construction-healthca-24?return=\/credits\/New%20Construction\/v4\/Material%20&amp;%20resources\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Building product disclosure and optimization &#8211; material ingredients<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lors de la s\u00e9lection des mat\u00e9riaux pour ce projet, ZGF s&rsquo;est concentr\u00e9 sur la r\u00e9duction du carbone incorpor\u00e9 dans les composants structurels tels que l&rsquo;acier et le b\u00e9ton. L&rsquo;une des raisons de ce choix \u00e9tait que les mat\u00e9riaux structurels, en particulier le b\u00e9ton, contribuaient de mani\u00e8re relativement importante \u00e0 l&#8217;empreinte carbone globale du projet. Un autre facteur \u00e9tait la raret\u00e9 des DEP pour les composants de l&rsquo;enveloppe du b\u00e2timent tels que le verre et le pl\u00e2tre \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9poque. Il \u00e9tait donc difficile de suivre l&rsquo;\u00e9volution du carbone incorpor\u00e9 dans ces mat\u00e9riaux. Pour les tours de l&rsquo;Amazon HQ2, il s&rsquo;agit notamment de consommer environ 24 % moins d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie par rapport \u00e0 des b\u00e2timents de taille similaire. Comment cela se fait-il? L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe de ZGF a pris en compte l&rsquo;ensemble des composants du projet, \u00e0 la fois isol\u00e9ment et en conjonction les uns avec les autres, afin d&rsquo;obtenir les meilleures performances possibles des tours.<\/p>\n<p>Par exemple, l&rsquo;ext\u00e9rieur vitr\u00e9 des b\u00e2timents n&rsquo;est pas seulement un choix esth\u00e9tique ; il rend les structures plus efficaces sur le plan \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique. Brian Earle remarque que \u00ab l&rsquo;une des choses int\u00e9ressantes lorsque l&rsquo;on construit un b\u00e2timent aussi grand est que les charges \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur du b\u00e2timent deviennent beaucoup plus importantes que la performance de l&rsquo;enveloppe (contr\u00f4le thermique) du b\u00e2timent. Nous avons constat\u00e9 qu&rsquo;il \u00e9tait plus important pour nous de r\u00e9duire notre consommation d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie pour l&rsquo;\u00e9clairage que d&rsquo;avoir une enveloppe thermique plus performante. La performance thermique et la transparence du verre nous ont vraiment aid\u00e9s \u00e0 optimiser l&rsquo;utilisation de l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie dans ce sens \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Bien entendu, l&rsquo;utilisation d&rsquo;un verre \u00e0 haute performance a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 cette solution. Le vitrage de ces tours est du <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.starphireglass.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Starphire Ultra-Clear<\/a><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> de Vitro Architectural Glass avec un rev\u00eatement \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vitroglazings.com\/solarban\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Solarban<\/a><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> en deuxi\u00e8me surface. Le substrat maximise le flux de lumi\u00e8re naturelle dans le b\u00e2timent, tandis que le rev\u00eatement \u00e0 faible \u00e9missivit\u00e9 r\u00e9duit les gains de chaleur ind\u00e9sirables. Cela permet de r\u00e9duire la consommation d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie globale du b\u00e2timent et d&rsquo;orienter la conception vers une enveloppe de b\u00e2timent enti\u00e8rement vitr\u00e9e. When it comes to building projects like this one, this means reducing embodied carbon as well as operational carbon emissions. Let\u2019s look at the tactics involved in reducing emissions from these two key sources.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - reducing embodied carbon\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"20px||||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<h3>Reducing Embodied Carbon<\/h3>\r\n<p>According to the American Institute of Architects\u2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/content.aia.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-10\/21_10_STN_DesignHealth_474805_Embodied_Carbon_Guide_Part1.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Embodied Carbon Guide<\/a>, embodied carbon accounts for about 38% of the carbon emissions of an average office building during its first ten years. In a high-performance structure like Amazon HQ2, that number is considerably higher. Therefore, managing the carbon used in a project\u2019s structure and building envelope has significant implications for its environmental impact during its first decade. Getting this right goes a long way toward being carbon neutral by 2040.<\/p>\r\n<p>To reduce the building\u2019s embodied carbon footprint, ZGF started by gathering EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations) for as many of the project\u2019s components as they could. As Project Manager Brian Earle explains, \u201cThe first step in being able to reduce carbon is to track it. And the first step to tracking is to encourage the creation of EPDs.\u201d The declarations paid off during the LEED<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> application stage, helping the project earn credits under <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/credits\/new-construction-core-and-shell-schools-new-construction-retail-new-construction-data-43?return=\/credits\/New%20Construction\/v4\/Material%20&%20resources\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Materials and Resources \u2013 Building product disclosure and optimization - environmental product declarations<\/em><\/a>, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/credits\/new-construction-core-and-shell-schools-new-construction-retail-new-construction-healthca-24?return=\/credits\/New%20Construction\/v4\/Material%20&%20resources\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Building product disclosure and optimization - material ingredients<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>At the time of this project\u2019s material selection, ZGF focused on reducing embodied carbon from structural components like steel and concrete. One reason for this choice was that structural materials, especially concrete, contributed relatively high levels to the project\u2019s overall carbon footprint. Another factor was the scarcity of EPDs for building envelope components like glass and gypsum at the time. This made it difficult to track embodied carbon from those materials. Over the last several years EPDs for envelope materials have become more available, and architects like ZGF are increasingly incorporating them into project requirements.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - Walker EPD callout\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"20px||||false|false\" custom_padding=\"20px|20px|20px|20px|false|false\" border_width_all=\"2px\" border_color_all=\"#000000\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>Walker offers EPDs for Walker Textures<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and AviProtek<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> bird friendly glass, as well as etched and unetched mirror. At the Amazon HQ2 towers, this includes consuming about 24% less energy than similar-sized buildings. How? The team at ZGF took a whole-building view of all the project\u2019s components, both in isolation and in conjunction with one another, to coax the best possible performance from the towers.<\/p>\r\n<p>For instance, the buildings\u2019 glassy exteriors aren\u2019t just an aesthetic choice; they make the structures more energy efficient. Brian Earle notes that, \u201cOne of the interesting things when you build a building this big is that the loads inside the building become much more important than the envelope performance <em>(thermal control)<\/em> of the building. We found that it was more important for us to reduce our energy use for lighting than to have a higher performing thermal envelope. The thermal performance and transparency of the glass really helped us optimize energy use in that sense.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>In other words, due to the high volume-to-surface-area ratio of these towers, increasing daylighting was more beneficial to overall energy performance than reducing glazed areas for the sake of thermal control. This wasn\u2019t an obvious conclusion; it required in-depth energy modelling. However, as Rebecca Pantschyschak explained, \u201cZGF loves doing this kind of calculation to make sure we\u2019re finding the right solution for the environment.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Of course, using high-performance glass helped with this solution. The glazing for these towers is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.starphireglass.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Starphire Ultra-Clear<\/a><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> from Vitro Architectural glass with a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vitroglazings.com\/solarban\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Solarban<\/a><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> low-e coating on surface two. The low-iron substrate maximizes natural light flow into the building while the low-e coating reduces unwanted heat gain. This helps to reduce the building\u2019s overall energy consumption and shifts the design toward a fully glazed building envelope. It also brought the project one step closer to LEED<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Platinum status by contributing toward the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/credits\/new-construction-core-and-shell-warehouse-and-distribution-centers-new-construction-0?return=\/credits\/New%20Construction\/v4\/Energy%20&%20atmosphere\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Optimize energy performance<\/em><\/a> credit.<\/p>\r\n<p>Making this project energy efficient required a whole-building perspective. By considering the glazing in conjunction with the structure\u2019s overall proportions and energy demands, ZGF was able to reduce energy consumption and design a truly sustainable building envelope.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_blurb use_icon=\"on\" font_icon=\"\ue60f||divi||400\" image_icon_width=\"50px\" admin_label=\"Blurb - Brian Earle quote\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_padding=\"30px||30px||false|false\" border_width_all=\"2px\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cThe way you achieve truly high-performance is by targeting inflection points between competing sustainability objectives. The glass on this project was a critical inflection point, balancing natural daylight with solar heat gain.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><em>- Brian Earle, Principal, ZGF Architects<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_blurb][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=\"Row - biophilic design\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - biophilic design\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<h2>Biophilic Design<\/h2>\r\n<p>The biophilic design process for Amazon HQ2 focused on protecting local wildlife, especially birds. Essentially, ZGF wanted the structures to \u201cland lightly\u201d in their setting, offering the greatest benefits with the least possible disruption.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - why use BF glass?\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"20px||||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<h3>Why use bird friendly glass?<\/h3>\r\n<p>Some projects use bird safe glass to comply with local legislations or to help achieve a green building certification like LEED<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, while others are bird friendly purely because the client or architectural firm is committed to protecting local ecosystems. The Amazon HQ2 project is a little bit of both.<\/p>\r\n<p>Arlington had no bird friendly building guidelines in place when this project was approved in 2019. However, the city does offer a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arlingtonva.us\/Government\/Programs\/Office-of-Sustainability-and-Environment\/AIRE\/Buildings\/Green-Building-Incentive-Policy#:~:text=The%20Arlington%20County%20Board%20updated,requirements%2C%20and%20other%20environmental%20components.\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Building Incentive Policy<\/a> (GBIP). Under the policy, \u201cbonus density is offered in exchange for new developments that commit to specific sustainability criteria.\u201d This means that large, high-density projects like Amazon HQ2 can be built in lower-density zones, provided they meet the GBIP\u2019s sustainability criteria. The latest version of the GBIP introduces the use of bird friendly glass among its considerations. The team already knew they\u2019d be designing a sustainable building envelope, including eco-friendly elements like bird deterrence. When asked if this was standard at ZGF, Rebecca Pantschyschak confirmed, \u201cI don\u2019t know that we have any ZGF project now that <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> talk about using bird-friendly glass.\u201d At this point, bird friendly building seems to be an integral part of how the firm approaches their work.<\/p>\r\n<p>From a LEED<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> standpoint, the use of bird friendly glass could have helped the project earn a credit for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/credits\/new-construction-core-and-shell-schools-new-construction-retail-new-construction-data-42?return=\/credits\/New%20Construction\/v4.1\" rel=\"noopener\">Innovation - Bird collision deterrence<\/a>. However, ZGF had already maxed out on other Innovation credits for this project, so the bird friendly glazing wasn\u2019t needed for their LEED<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> points.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - designing with Audubon\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<h3>Designing Hand in Hand with Audubon<\/h3>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\"1_2,1_2\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"1_2\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - Avi glass\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"0px||||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>ZGF consulted with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.audubonva.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Audubon Society of Northern Virginia<\/a> to plan the building\u2019s bird safe building strategies. Taking the Society\u2019s recommendations into account, the final design incorporates <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walkerglass.com\/products\/low-e-coated-bird-friendly-glass\/\" rel=\"noopener\">AviProtek<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> E<\/a> bird friendly markers on the first surface and a Solarban<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> low-e coating on the second surface, from ground level up to 50 feet from grade.<\/p>\r\n<p>One of the advantages of this particular bird friendly solution is that it uses the same Starphire<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> substrate and low-e coating as the rest of the project, so the glass matches perfectly and creates a cohesive building envelope. The first-surface placement ensures that markers will be visible in all conditions, and the all-over coverage doesn\u2019t leave tantalizing \u201cgaps\u201d for birds to attempt to fly through.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - Avi placement\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>We should note that only the walls facing the nearby Met Park incorporate bird friendly glass, whereas windows facing away from the park use regular unetched glass. The design team felt that birds would be most at risk when taking off from the parkland habitat, so they focused the project\u2019s bird friendly resources in that direction. It\u2019s an unusual approach but it has precedents in legislations such as San Francisco\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sfplanning.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/reports\/bird_safe_bldgs\/Standards%20for%20Bird%20Safe%20Buildings%20-%2011-30-11.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Standards for Bird-Safe Buildings<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - conclusion\" _builder_version=\"4.22.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"20px||||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>As we\u2019ve seen, the sheer scale of the Amazon HQ2 towers has a major impact on their design. Their size determined which energy strategies would be most efficient and what material choices would have the most impact, as well as making the project a candidate for Arlington\u2019s Green Building Incentive Policy. The scale of the project also means that it is guaranteed to influence the surrounding environment, whether for better or for worse. The team at ZGF was acutely aware of this.
