C\u2019est certainement le cas avec le projet <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walkerglass.com\/fr\/r%C3%A9alisations\/le-hub-du-projet-prairie-shores\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Hub \u00e0 Prairie Shores<\/a>. Ce nouvel espace communautaire con\u00e7u par <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gensler.com\/projects\/prairie-shores-clubhouse\" rel=\"noopener\">Gensler<\/a> se retrouve dans le quartier de Bronzeville \u00e0 Chicago. Qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse de la fa\u00e7ade aux motifs sur mesure d\u00e9poli \u00e0 l\u2019acide du b\u00e2timent, de son effet sur la communaut\u00e9 locale ou de son r\u00f4le de pionnier pour la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des oiseaux dans l\u2019architecture de Chicago, chaque aspect de ce projet a sa propre histoire.\u00a0 Qui de mieux plac\u00e9 que l\u2019architecte qui \u00e9tait \u00e0 la t\u00eate de cette conception pour partager sa vision du projet ? Cette histoire g\u00e9ologique a inspir\u00e9 l\u2019aspect dunaire du Hub \u00e0 Prairie Shores. La fa\u00e7ade d\u00e9polie \u00e0 l\u2019acide \u00e9voque le mouvement d\u2019une vague s\u2019\u00e9crasant sur le sable.<\/p>\n<p>Le verre d\u00e9poli \u00e0 l\u2019acide fait partie int\u00e9grante du projet et comme l\u2019eau, il est un mat\u00e9riau dynamique qui cr\u00e9e diff\u00e9rents reflets en fonction de l\u2019\u00e9clairage et de l\u2019heure de la journ\u00e9e. Avant la construction, Gensler a cr\u00e9\u00e9 une maquette grandeur nature du mur-rideau pour voir comment la fa\u00e7ade \u00e9tait pour interagir avec la fa\u00e7ade. Cette maquette a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 les multiples facettes du verre d\u00e9poli \u00e0 l\u2019acide, montrant qu\u2019il peut avoir un aspect diff\u00e9rent la nuit, le matin et l\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi. La nuit, le b\u00e2timent s\u2019illumine comme un phare avec une lumi\u00e8re dispers\u00e9e par le verre d\u00e9poli \u00e0 l\u2019acide. Le verre d\u00e9poli \u00e0 l\u2019acide disperse la lumi\u00e8re de l\u2019int\u00e9rieur, donnant au b\u00e2timent l\u2019aspect d\u2019un phare g\u00e9ant point\u00e9 vers la ville.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\u00a0\u00bbText \u2013 why acid-etched glass?\u00a0\u00bb _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.21.0\u2033 _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb custom_margin=\u00a0\u00bb45px||||false|false\u00a0\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00a0\u00bb{}\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<h2>Pourquoi utiliser du verre d\u00e9poli \u00e0 l\u2019acide?<\/h2>\n<p>La cr\u00e9ation d\u2019une telle fa\u00e7ade n\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 sans poser quelques d\u00e9fis. Gensler avait planifi\u00e9 utiliser des motifs sur mesure d\u00e9polis \u00e0 l\u2019acide sur la surface ext\u00e9rieure. Le d\u00e9sir \u00e9tait que le vitrage r\u00e9agisse de fa\u00e7on dynamique aux diff\u00e9rentes conditions d\u2019\u00e9clairage. Apr\u00e8s tout, la fa\u00e7ade devait rappeler les vagues du lac Michigan. Le d\u00e9polissage \u00e0 l\u2019acide en surface 1 a permis d\u2019obtenir cet effet de profondeur qui n\u2019est pas possible avec la peinture \u00e0 c\u00e9ramique ou l\u2019impression digitale.<\/p>\n<p>Les cinq motifs sur mesure ont compliqu\u00e9 les processus de production et d\u2019assemblage, en partie parce que ceux-ci se devaient d\u2019\u00eatre install\u00e9 \u00e0 des endroits pr\u00e9cis de la fa\u00e7ade.\u00a0 Il \u00e9tait clair que les motifs \u00e9taient un \u00e9l\u00e9ment de design non n\u00e9gociable pour ce projet. Ce nombre a rapidement \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9duit \u00e0 dix-huit lors des premi\u00e8res \u00e9tapes de la conception, puis \u00e0 dix motifs uniques. Finalement, l\u2019\u00e9quipe a r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 obtenir l\u2019aspect souhait\u00e9 avec seulement cinq motifs de verre d\u00e9poli \u00e0 l\u2019acide. John Just, repr\u00e9sentant architectural de Walker pour la r\u00e9gion Centre-Nord des \u00c9tats-Unis, a fourni la cl\u00e9. Il a sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 d\u2019utiliser des motifs sym\u00e9triques et d\u2019installer la moiti\u00e9 des panneaux \u00ab\u00a0\u00e0 l\u2019envers\u00a0\u00bb. Ces grands panneaux de verre ont \u00e9t\u00e9 m\u00e9ticuleusement calibr\u00e9s pour cr\u00e9er l\u2019impression d\u2019une vague brumeuse, souffl\u00e9e par le vent sur des dunes. Ces motifs ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une \u00e9troite collaboration entre les \u00e9quipes de Gensler et de Walker.<\/p>\n<h4>Optimisation de la lumi\u00e8re du jour<\/h4>\n<p>La lumi\u00e8re du jour \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du b\u00e2timent a \u00e9t\u00e9 une consid\u00e9ration primordiale lors de la conception de ce projet. Le d\u00e9poli \u00e0 l\u2019acide diffuse la lumi\u00e8re naturelle \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du b\u00e2timent, tandis que le substrat <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.starphireglass.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Starphire Ultra-Clear<\/a><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> de Vitro Architectural Glass offre une lumi\u00e8re pure et claire sans la teinte verd\u00e2tre du verre \u00ab clair \u00bb habituel.<\/p>\n<h4>Vitrage \u00e9cologique<\/h4>\n<p>Bien que Gensler ne visait pas une certification environnementale particuli\u00e8re pour ce b\u00e2timent, la durabilit\u00e9 \u00e9tait tout de m\u00eame une priorit\u00e9. Le b\u00e2timent comprend des espaces de travail, un caf\u00e9, des salles d\u2019exercice et une salle de jeux, chaque espace ayant besoin d\u2019une quantit\u00e9 diff\u00e9rente d\u2019intimit\u00e9 et de lumi\u00e8re naturelle. Par exemple, les personnes qui font de l\u2019exercice dans les salles de sport appr\u00e9cient la vue sur l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur, mais aussi un peu d\u2019intimit\u00e9 pendant qu\u2019elles s\u2019entra\u00eenent. That geological history inspired the dune-like appearance of The Hub at Prairie Shores. The acid-etched fa\u00e7ade evokes the motion of a wave crashing over a dune and produces a delicate shadow effect, while the brickwork sparkles subtly like sand.<\/p>\r\n<p>Custom acid-etched glass was integral to the project\u2019s design narrative. Like water, it\u2019s a dynamic material that creates different reflections depending on the lighting and time of day. Before building, Gensler created a full-scale mock-up of the curtain wall to see how it would interact with the fa\u00e7ade\u2019s lighting. This mock-up revealed the multifaceted nature of acid etch glass, showing how it can look different at night, in the morning, and in the afternoon. The finished building lights up at night like a beacon, and its light is dispersed and amplified by the acid-etched glass. Gensler planned the curtainwall with first-surface acid etching and multiple custom designs. They needed the glazing to respond dynamically to the lighting conditions at any given moment and have an organic, \u201cliving\u201d quality. After all, it was supposed to be reminiscent of the waves of Lake Michigan. First-surface acid etching provided this dynamic quality in a way that opaque treatments like frit or back painting simply cannot.<\/p>\r\n<p>Then there are the five custom Walker Textures<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> patterns. These patterns complicated the production and assembly processes, in part because every new acid-etched pattern requires its own bespoke manufacturing setup. However, the patterns were a non-negotiable part of the fa\u00e7ade. They create a modulated effect that grades up and down across the width of the fa\u00e7ade, creating a hazy, organic wave shape and reinforcing the building\u2019s lakeshore concept.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\"1_2,1_2\" _builder_version=\"4.20.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"1_2\" _builder_version=\"4.20.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - technical challenges\" _builder_version=\"4.20.2\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"|10px|||false|false\" hover_enabled=\"0\" global_colors_info=\"{}\" sticky_enabled=\"0\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>Initially, Gensler had thought of using a different acid-etched pattern for every pane of glass: a whopping seventy-two patterns in all. This was quickly reduced to eighteen in the early design stages, then streamlined to ten unique patterns. In the end, the team was able to achieve the look they wanted with just five acid-etch glass patterns. John Just, Walker\u2019s Architectural Manager for the US North-Central region, provided the key. He suggested using symmetrical patterns and installing half the panels \u201cupside down\u201d. This way, each etching pattern could work as two different designs in situ and Gensler could achieve the look of ten patterns for the cost of five.<\/p>\r\n<p>Getting from seventy-two designs to five changed the project from an impracticable dream to an attainable challenge. These large panels feature five different custom patterns, meticulously graded to create the impression of a hazy, windblown wave over dunes. These patterns were developed through close collaboration between the teams at Gensler and Walker Glass.<\/p>\r\n<h4>Optimized daylighting<\/h4>\r\n<p>Interior daylighting was a primary consideration in designing this project. The etched pattern on surface one diffused natural light throughout the building\u2019s interior, while the low-iron Starphire Ultra-Clear\u00ae substrate from Vitro Architectural Glass delivers pure, clear light without the greenish tint of regular \u201cclear\u201d glass.<\/p>\r\n<h4>Green glazing<\/h4>\r\n<p>Although Gensler was not aiming for sustainable building certification for this project, sustainability was still a priority, and the fa\u00e7ade glazing was an important part of their green building strategy. The building includes co-working spaces, a caf\u00e9, exercise rooms and a games room, with each space needing different amounts of privacy and natural daylight. For example, people exercising in the gym areas would enjoy views of the outdoors, but they\u2019d also appreciate some privacy while they worked out. On the other hand, people working in office spaces would benefit from plenty of daylight to boost their energy, but they wouldn\u2019t want sunlight falling directly onto their laptops and making the screens unreadable.<\/p>\r\n<p>Gensler leveraged the unique qualities of acid-etched glass to give occupants exactly what they needed, where they needed it. In the gym, for instance, the etched patterning extends from the floor to just above eye level. Gym-goers have a clear view of the sky and nearby trees, as well as a diluted sightline to the street. On the other hand, they\u2019re hidden from passers-by because the etched glass blocks views from the exterior.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the coworking offices, etch patterns cover almost the whole surface of the glass. This extensive coverage makes the glazing behave more like full-surface etched glass: increasing VLT (visible light transmittance) while eliminating glare. In most buildings, it\u2019s common for people with laptops to stay away from bright windows because the strong sunlight interferes with their screens\u2019 visibility. At The Hub, though, people set down their computers right next to the glass. Even next to the window, they get soft, diffused light that brightens up the space but doesn\u2019t cause glare.<\/p>\r\n<p>Much of The Hub\u2019s internal lighting works with daylight sensors. If there's plenty of daylight in the building the lights will stay off, and so far, they almost always do stay off during the daytime. Project architect Sean McGuire explains, \u201cThis building is on a migratory path for birds, right next to Lake Michigan. It would be remiss of us to have this beautiful nature metaphor and not consider the effect that glass has on birds.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>There\u2019s a common misconception that the risk of bird strikes increases with elevation, but in fact, most collisions occur within the first few storeys from grade, so low-rise buildings like The Hub can be just as dangerous as skyscrapers. The Gensler team was acutely aware of this risk, especially considering that nearly half of The Hub\u2019s building envelope is made of glass.<\/p>\r\n<p>Fortunately, the first-surface acid-etching that gives the fa\u00e7ade its ephemeral aesthetic is also the most effective option for bird deterrence. It\u2019s a fantastic example of purpose-driven design, with an aesthetic concept aligned to the project\u2019s environmental goals. At the same time, they were building around a symbolic reference to the site\u2019s history in a beautiful, dynamic way. Finally, there was the team\u2019s commitment to sustainable development. Custom acid-etched glass helped achieve all these goals. Inside The Hub, the first-surface etched patterns optimize daylighting and give privacy where it\u2019s needed. From the exterior, they contribute to the fa\u00e7ade\u2019s ephemeral, glowing appearance. The first-surface etch deters bird strikes, making this one of the first bird-friendly projects in Chicago. The glazing design for this building wasn\u2019t cookie-cutter, and the effort that went into it paid off in a big way. We\u2019re delighted to see Gensler\u2019s innovative use of custom patterning on the first surface, and can\u2019t wait to see what other architects will do with acid-etched
