Ce projet a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7u pour r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 la strat\u00e9gie de d\u00e9veloppement durable stricte de l&rsquo;\u00e9tablissement en plus de viser pour une certification <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thegbi.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Globes<\/a>. De plus, l\u2019\u00e9difice devait contribuer \u00e0 la vie communautaire sur le campus et r\u00e9pondre aux besoins de plusieurs facult\u00e9s de sciences de l\u2019universit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Pour atteindre ses objectifs, le b\u00e2timent devrait servir des laboratoires de recherches \u00e0 la fine pointe de la technologie. Les besoins \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques accrus se devaient d\u2019\u00eatre rencontr\u00e9s en plus d\u2019inclure des serres pour la recherche sur les cultures. Une vue sur les activit\u00e9s du campus \u00e9tait n\u00e9cessaire et l\u2019\u00e9difice devait s\u2019incorporer \u00e0 l&rsquo;esth\u00e9tique gothique traditionnelle de l&rsquo;universit\u00e9. Oh, et bien s\u00fbr, il fallait que la fenestration soit s\u00e9curitaire pour les oiseaux. Les professeurs et le personnel en avaient assez de voir des oiseaux se heurter aux fen\u00eatres du campus. De plus, la sant\u00e9 \u00e9cologique \u00e9tait au c\u0153ur de la mission du nouveau b\u00e2timent. Apr\u00e8s des recherches approfondies, les architectes ont choisi <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walkerglass.com\/fr\/options-produits\/aviprotek-e-motif-217\/\" rel=\"noopener\">AviProtek<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> E motif 217<\/a>, qui pr\u00e9sente un motif de 2&Prime; x 2&Prime; (50mm x 50mm) de points d\u00e9polis \u00e0 l&rsquo;acide de 5 mm sur la surface ext\u00e9rieure. Plusieurs facteurs ont conduit \u00e0 ce choix. Tout d&rsquo;abord, le motif lui-m\u00eame : les marqueurs d\u00e9polis \u00e0 l&rsquo;acide sont plac\u00e9s suffisamment pr\u00e8s pour satisfaire la norme <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csagroup.org\/fr\/store\/product\/CSA%20A460:19\/\" rel=\"noopener\">CSA A460:19 pour les b\u00e2timents respectueux des oiseaux<\/a>. Cette norme est largement accept\u00e9e comme le meilleur mod\u00e8le pour le verre pour la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des oiseaux. En effet, la premi\u00e8re surface sera visible pour les oiseaux dans la plupart des conditions m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques et d&rsquo;\u00e9clairage, tandis que les marqueurs sur les surfaces int\u00e9rieures sont souvent masqu\u00e9s par des reflets. Ces principes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 test\u00e9s sur de nombreux b\u00e2timents ainsi que dans des \u00e9tudes sur le terrain et se sont av\u00e9r\u00e9s \u00eatre la meilleure m\u00e9thode pour diminuer efficacement les collisions d&rsquo;oiseaux. M\u00eame dans une zone \u00e0 haut risque identifi\u00e9 comme le campus de l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 de la Saskatchewan, les impacts d&rsquo;oiseaux sont \u00e9vitables. L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe de Flad Architects visait \u00e9galement la certification Green Globes. This project was designed to meet the institution\u2019s strict Sustainability Strategy and aim for <a href=\"https:\/\/thegbi.org\/\">Green Globes<\/a> certification, as well as contributing to community life on campus and supporting the needs of multiple science faculties.<\/p>\r\n<p>To meet its goals, the building would have to serve state-of-the-art research labs with enhanced energy needs, include greenhouses for crop research, give sightlines onto campus activities, and merge seamlessly into the university\u2019s traditional Collegiate Gothic aesthetic. Oh, and of course, it would have to be bird-friendly. Strategies to meet this commitment include a robust framework based on the United Nations\u2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/sustainable-development-goals\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>. To achieve these goals, the university is directing its efforts toward long-term solutions such as energy-efficient architecture and learning programs geared toward sustainable development. As a research centre dedicated to eco-friendly agriculture, the CSRB project was a golden opportunity to act on these principles. Chitani Ndisale, the project manager, was enthusiastic about the opportunity. He described the experience to us, saying, \u201cIt was a wonderful thing to be able to work on a project where everybody, from the funding stream perspective to the actual campus goals, aligned in wanting a building that was ecologically responsible.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - why use BF glass? p1\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"45px||0px||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<h2>Why use bird-friendly glass?<\/h2>\r\n<p>Even though the city of Saskatoon and the province of Saskatchewan have no bird-deterrent building legislation, bird-friendly glass at the University of Saskatchewan was non-negotiable. Faculty and staff had enough of seeing birds collide against campus windows. Furthermore, ecological health was at the heart of the new building\u2019s mission. It only made sense to take measures to protect wild bird species.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" background_image=\"https:\/\/www.walkerglass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/university-of-saskatchewan-aviprotek-217-with-solarban-70xl-19-web.jpg\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - Dr. Morrissey quote\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" background_color=\"#ffffff\" module_alignment=\"center\" custom_margin=\"35px|45px|35px|45px|false|false\" custom_padding=\"20px|20px|20px|20px|false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cAs the building we were constructing was to focus primarily on research aimed to life and natural sciences, we wanted to provide a facility that would not only support the work they do, but the principles that their research is dedicated to which involves the conservation, preservation and prevention of harm to the natural environment and those living in it.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Dr. Christy Morrissey, Professor at the University of Saskatchewan, specializing in the study of wild bird population health<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\"3_5,2_5\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" background_enable_image=\"off\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"3_5\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - why use BF glass? p2\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"0px||0px||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>Flad Architects tackled the problem head-on by selecting bird-friendly glass for the building\u2019s windows. After extensive research, they chose <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walkerglass.com\/products-options\/aviprotek-e-pattern-217\/\" rel=\"noopener\">AviProtek\u00ae E design 217<\/a>, which features a 2\u201d x 2\u201d pattern of 5mm acid-etched dots on the first surface. Several factors led to this choice. First, the pattern itself: the acid-etched markers are placed close enough to satisfy the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csagroup.org\/store\/product\/CSA%20A460:19\/\" rel=\"noopener\">CSA A460:19 Standard for bird-friendly building<\/a>. This standard is widely accepted as the best model for bird-deterrent glass. It requires that visual markers be spaced no more than 50mm (2\u201d) apart either vertically or horizontally, so small bird species won\u2019t try to fly between them.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=\"2_5\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_image src=\"https:\/\/www.walkerglass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/aviproteke-igu-eng-aviprotek217.jpg\" alt=\"AviProtek E bird-friendly glass with Solarban low-e coating on surface 2\" title_text=\"AviProtekE IGU ENG AviProtek217\" url=\"https:\/\/www.walkerglass.com\/products-options\/aviprotek-e-pattern-217\/\" url_new_window=\"on\" admin_label=\"Image - Avi E pattern 217\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"45px||||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - why use BF glass? p3\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"0px||0px||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>Visual markers must be placed on the first surface of the glass. This is because the first surface will be visible to birds in most weather and lighting conditions, whereas markers on inner surfaces are often hidden by reflections or glare. These principles have been tested on many buildings as well as in field studies and have proven themselves to be the best method for effective bird strike deterrence. Let\u2019s see how well they performed at the University of Saskatchewan.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - collisions risks & results 1\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"45px||0px||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<h2>Bird collisions: risks and results<\/h2>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\"1_2,1_2\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"1_2\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_image src=\"https:\/\/www.walkerglass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/university-of-saskatchewan-aviprotek-217-with-solarban-70xl-27-web.jpg\" alt=\"Bird-friendly glass at the University of Saskatchewan\" title_text=\"University Of Saskatchewan Aviprotek 217 With Solarban 70XL 27 WEB\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"0px||||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=\"1_2\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - collisions risks & results 2\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"0px||0px||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>Since the CSRB\u2019s construction, graduate students have studied bird-to-glass collisions in Saskatoon and on the University of Saskatchewan campus. A 2021 MES (Master of Environment and Sustainability) thesis analyzed collision rates in Saskatoon based on data gathered from FLAP Canada\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/flap.org\/global-bird-collision-mapper\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Bird Collision Mapper (GBCM) website<\/a><a href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>. Candidate Abbey Duinker found that the city\u2019s downtown core represented fully one-fifth of recorded bird strikes in Saskatoon. The University of Saskatchewan campus saw some of the very highest collision rates within the same neighbourhood.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - collisions risks & results 3\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"0px||0px||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>An earlier thesis from MES candidate Anang Grace Yashim recorded bird strikes against four different campus buildings, including the CSRB<a href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>. The study was conducted over three months during the spring\/summer migration and breeding seasons when wild bird activity was at its peak.<\/p>\r\n<p>Like Ms. Duinker, Anang Grace Yashim found that the campus windows posed a serious threat to local bird life. The Agriculture and Bioresources Building alone accounted for nine bird collisions over the three months of observation. Interestingly, none of these collisions occurred at the acid-etched portions of the fa\u00e7ade, nor around the acid-etched glass adjacent to the building\u2019s rooftop garden. <strong>There were zero collisions reported against the CSRB.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>What should we conclude from these studies? Even in a proven high-risk area such as the University of Saskatchewan campus, bird strikes are preventable. Effective bird-friendly glass like AviProtek\u00ae can mean the difference between life and death for bird populations.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - high latitude, high performance p1\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"45px||0px||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<h2>High latitude, high performance<\/h2>\r\n<p>In addition to preventing bird strikes, the CSRB had to follow the University of Saskatchewan\u2019s 2021-2030 Sustainability Strategy, which is modelled on the United Nations\u2019 Sustainable Development Goals. The team at Flad Architects was also aiming for Green Globes certification. This might not seem too difficult at first, but let\u2019s not forget that they were designing a building to serve the specialized energy requirements of multiple science labs. Oh, and of course there was the question of heating a 72,118 ft\u00b2 complex through Saskatoon\u2019s sub-zero winters. Reaching the project\u2019s energy efficiency targets would be a challenge.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\"3_5,2_5\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"3_5\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - high latitude, high performance p2\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"0px||0px||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>The team at Flad Architects could have made their lives easier by reducing window space. However, that would have meant compromising on the project\u2019s aesthetic and future users\u2019 visual comfort, and the team wasn\u2019t willing to make those concessions. Ultimately, they found their solution in a Solarban\u00ae 70 low-emissivity coating from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vitroglazings.com\/products\/low-e-glass\/solarban-70-glass\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Vitro Architectural Glass<\/a>. They were able to pair this treatment with bird-friendly glass from the AviProtek\u00ae E series, which combines bird-deterrent markers on surface one with a Solarban\u00ae low-e coating on surface two. At the CSRB, the resulting sealed units delivered an SHGC value of 0.27 and U-value of 0.28 while maintaining 64% visible light transmittance. With this combination, Flad Architects was able to meet their project performance goals without sacrificing views or aesthetics.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=\"2_5\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_image src=\"https:\/\/www.walkerglass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/aviproteke-igu-eng-solarban70.jpg\" alt=\"AviProtek E bird-friendly glass with Solarban low-e coating on surface 2\" title_text=\"AviProtekE IGU ENG Solarban70\" admin_label=\"Image - Avi E Solarban 70\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"45px||||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - high latitude, high performance p3\" _builder_version=\"4.15.1\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"0px||0px||false|false\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>Project manager Chitani Ndisale explained, \u201cFrom the design perspective, having higher percentages of glazed area obviously made the building a lot more attractive. But there was a lot of back and forth, a lot of integration. We worked with our engineering partners to come up with that perfect balance of opaque surfaces vs. transparent surfaces. The glass product allowed us to have the maximum allowable percentage of glazed areas because it had a higher performance level.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>The work that Chitani and his colleagues put into integration paid off. Rather, it needs to pervade all decisions within our institution.\u201d<a href=\"#references\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a> What could exemplify that approach more thoroughly than the university\u2019s Collaborative Science Research Building? As a science complex that includes drought-resistant crop research and the protection of wild species, the building is dedicated to sustainable values.
