Here\u2019s what she had to say.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Walker Glass<\/strong> \u2013 Jos\u00e9e, thank you for sitting down with us today. Let\u2019s start with the basics.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text 1 - What is an HPD\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\" custom_margin=\"60px||||false|false\"]<\/p>\r\n<h4>1. What is an HPD\u00ae?<\/h4>\r\n<p><strong>Jos\u00e9e Lupien<\/strong> \u2013 An HPD\u00ae, or Health Product Declaration\u00ae, is a report which discloses a material\u2019s ingredients at the chemical level. It is based on a standard developed by the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hpd-collaborative.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Product Declaration\u00ae Collaborative (HPDC)<\/a>. This gives manufacturers a well-established procedure for technical reporting, and it gives users standardized readings on a manufacturer\u2019s product. So it makes sure that everyone has access to the same methodology.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>WG \u2013 <\/strong>That seems like an important first step. It means we can all speak the same language when it comes to product data disclosure.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text 2 - Why choose products with HPD\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\" custom_margin=\"60px||||false|false\"]<\/p>\r\n<h4>2. Why should architects choose products with HPD\u00ae documentation?<\/h4>\r\n<p><strong>JL<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0It\u2019s important to look at HPD\u00ae as a tool for transparency. The HPD\u00ae\u00a0doesn't necessarily mean\u00a0a product is environmentally friendly. However, by disclosing health product data in an HPD\u00ae, manufacturers show that they are acting in good faith and give architects the opportunity to make informed choices. That\u2019s why we talk a lot about transparency, to start.<\/p>\r\n<p>Let\u2019s look at this in the context of green building certifications, such as LEED. When architects look at\u00a0manufacturers and assess their HPD\u00ae, it's a first step. However, they'll expect the manufacturers to try to improve their results moving forward. HPD\u00ae reports are valid for three years, and those three years give manufacturers a window of opportunity to optimize their materials and processes. By doing so, they can expect better ratings, which means their products can help a project earn more LEED points.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>WG <\/strong>- So the next time a manufacturer goes through the HPD\u00ae process, the results may be better, because they\u2019re made some changes to their manufacturing processes.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>JL<\/strong> \u2013 Exactly.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text 3 - What to look for\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\" custom_margin=\"60px||||false|false\"]<\/p>\r\n<h4>3. What should architects look for when they\u2019re reviewing an HPD\u00ae?<\/h4>\r\n<p><strong>JL \u2013<\/strong>There are a few key things to look at.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>First, check to see if the report is complete.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>See whether the HPD\u00ae is still valid. You\u2019ll find publication and expiry dates at the foot of the first page.<\/li>\r\n<li>Check the disclosure threshold in Section 1: Summary. Some reports disclose ingredients at a threshold of 100 parts per million (ppm). Others use 1,000ppm.<\/li>\r\n<li>Make sure that the product covered by the HPD\u00ae is the same one that you\u2019ll be using in your building project.\u00a0That's really important.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Finally, check to see whether the declaration is self-declared or prepared by a third party.\u00a0Since it\u2019s an open standard, manufacturers can prepare the HPD\u00ae themselves. However, in that case the documents will be marked \u201cself-declared\u201d. Since we\u2019re looking for transparency, this isn\u2019t the ideal method.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\"3_5,2_5\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\"][et_pb_column type=\"3_5\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text 4 - How to be transparent\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\" custom_margin=\"0px||||false|false\" custom_padding=\"|20px|||false|false\"]<\/p>\r\n<h4>4. What can manufacturers do to be as transparent as possible?<\/h4>\r\n<p><strong>JL<\/strong> \u2013 In the last few years, the HPD\u00ae Collaborative has identified a group of experts recognized by the HPDC, who are approved to prepare HPD\u00ae reports as unbiased third parties. There are two levels. You can have an HPD\u00ae prepared by a third partly, and\/or you can have one verified by a third party. When Vertima prepares an HPD\u00ae for a company, it is marked \u201cPrepared by independent certifier approved by HPDC.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=\"2_5\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\"][et_pb_blurb _builder_version=\"4.4.1\" custom_margin=\"45px||||false|false\" custom_padding=\"20px|20px|20px|20px|false|false\" border_width_all=\"2px\" border_color_all=\"#00457a\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cHealth Product Declarations\u00ae are a commitment to transparency and improvement. It\u2019s not something you do for marketing cachet. It needs to become part of the company\u2019s DNA.\u201d<br \/><em>-\u2002Jos\u00e9e Lupien<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_blurb][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.4.1\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text 4 - How to be transparent\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\" custom_margin=\"0px||||false|false\"]<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>WG <\/strong>- Is it better to have a third party like Vertima prepare the HPD\u00ae, or for the manufacturer to prepare it and send it to you for verification?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>JL<\/strong> \u2013 It\u2019s better if we prepare it, but we can go even further.\u00a0Even if we prepared it, was there an approved third party who verified it afterward, to challenge the results?\u00a0That\u2019s something we always do when working on Environmental Product Declarations (EPD).\u00a0We are qualified experts to prepare EPDs, but we also send these documents to a third party for peer review. This additional step challenges our results and our interpretations, which adds credibility to the data.<\/p>\r\n<p>This extra step is an obligatory part of the EPD process, but it\u2019s optional when preparing an HPD\u00ae. It\u2019s a \u201cnice to have\u201d. However, when you take the additional step to verify your HPD\u00ae with a third party approved by HPDC, it adds value by giving the project more points under LEED 4.1.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>WG <\/strong>\u2013 Okay, so you would go through this additional validation and you would earn more LEED points in return. Does it cost more?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>JL<\/strong> - Yes, there is an additional cost because there\u2019s another party involved, but it is still affordable. The\u00a0manufacturer\u00a0may not\u00a0see\u00a0an immediate return on the\u00a0investment, but the users will benefit. A third-party verified HPD\u00ae earns 1.5 points for each 1 point earned by an unverified HPD\u00ae. In other words, it delivers one and a half times the value.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\"2_5,3_5\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\"][et_pb_column type=\"2_5\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\"][et_pb_blurb _builder_version=\"4.4.1\" custom_margin=\"45px||||false|false\" custom_padding=\"20px|20px|20px|20px|false|false\" border_width_all=\"2px\" border_color_all=\"#00457a\"]<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to manage the raw materials and processes involved, from the manufacturer all the way to installation. Other than earning LEED points, what are the benefits of having an HPD\u00ae?<\/h4>\r\n<p><strong>JL<\/strong> - There are two benefits. The declarations can give confidence to architects and other users, by showing that a manufacturer has been transparent and disclosed a product\u2019s information. They can also know if there are materials in the product that may be harmful people\u2019s health. All of that information is detailed in the report.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>WG \u2013<\/strong> If the product is going to be used in a hospital, or a school, for example, it seems like it would be important to know that the materials are safe.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.4.1\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\"][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text 5 - benefits of HPD part 2\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\" custom_margin=\"0px||||false|false\"]<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>JL<\/strong> \u2013 Yes, but it\u2019s not only about the end use. We have to take into account that the analysis is based on the raw materials. Even if a product is perfectly safe in its final setting, that\u2019s not the whole picture. We want to know if it\u2019s safe for the workers who make it, and for the people installing it. An HPD\u00ae helps us choose the best products for everyone\u2019s health, from start to finish.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>WG<\/strong> - Okay, that makes a lot of sense. That also explains why an HPD\u00ae is important for fabricators, contractors, and for the entire construction industry. It\u2019s to protect the health of everyone involved in the process.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>JL<\/strong> \u2013 Exactly. It\u2019s important to manage the raw materials and processes involved, from the manufacturer all the way to installation. Basically, we take the product, the material in the raw state, into consideration to assess the impact on people\u2019s health. An HPD\u00ae helps manufacturing companies, but also architects and users. In my opinion, that's the most important thing to remember.<\/p>\r\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=\"Text - points to remember\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\" custom_margin=\"60px||||false|false\"]<\/p>\r\n<h4>Points to remember<\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Health Product Declarations\u00ae demonstrate to users that the manufacturer is committed to transparency and full disclosure.<\/li>\r\n<li>It helps builders to choose one product over another, based on industry-standard criteria.<\/li>\r\n<li>Architects and building owners can use the HPD\u00ae to earn points toward LEED, or for WELL qualification.<\/li>\r\n<li>Manufacturers gain a detailed overview of their products\u2019 effects on people's health. They can use the information from one HPD\u00ae to optimize their results on future HPD\u00ae.<\/li>\r\n<li>The HPD\u00ae process helps everyone in the building industry make better choices for human
